Overview

Inspects, maintains, and repairs locomotives in accordance with FRA regulations.

 

Extra Board Shift

 

Initial pay between $26.50/hr - $29.81/hr based off experience. Salary will increase to $33.12/hr once qualified (typically takes 6 months to a year)

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

 

  • Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly.
  • Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly.
  • Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation of units to ensure functionality and performance.
  • Operates welding equipment to cut or weld parts.
  • Performs mechanical inspection on locomotives and repairs defects to conform to FRA regulations.
  • Tests locomotives for performance by use of load box.
  • Replaces brake shoes on locomotives.
  • Disassembles and rebuilds locomotive trucks and replaces wheel sets and traction motors.
  • Repairs and rebuilds diesel engines, air compressors, and many other locomotive components.
  • Disassembles and reassembles locomotives and machinery.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

 

High School diploma/GED and One year certificate from college or technical school; or 4 years heavy mechanical repair experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience reading blueprints.

 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

 

Ability to understand both verbal and written communications – both general and technical.  Ability to write rou­tine reports and correspondence.

 

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

 

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, us­ing whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to com­pute rate, ratio, and percent.

 

 

REASONING ABILITY

 

Problem solving and trouble shooting skills. Must have mechanical aptitude.  Ability to deal with prob­lems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

Must be qualified welder.

 

 

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, OR REGISTRATIONS

 

Must have current valid driver’s license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in out­side weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne par­ticles and risk of electrical shock.

 

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

 

OTHER

 

Must have personal tools (com­plete set of small hand tools up to and including ½" drive ratchet and sock­et set).
