Overview

 

SUMMARY

Repairs, inspects, and installs systems, apparatus, and components of railroad signaling systems and highway traffic control devices.

Responsibilities

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Installs railroad signaling equipment and highway traffic control devices according to layout plans and/or FRA regulations.
  • Maintains signaling and traffic control devices; analyzes operational malfunctioning with testing devices to locate, diagnose, and ascertain repairs to be made.
  • Examines mechanisms and disassembles components to replace, clean, adjust, or repair parts, wires, relays, circuits, or signaling units.
  • Operates and tests equipment to ensure elimination of malfunction.
  • Climbs poles or digs trenches to install or repair equipment.
  • Maintain written electronic records of all tests, inspections, and repairs performed.

 

 

 

Qualifications

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • One year certificate from college or technical school in electrical field; or three to six months’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and ex-perience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as speed discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete or abstract variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instruc-tions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR REGISTRATIONS

  • Must have a Class B CDL driver license, or obtain same within six months.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee frequently works in high, precarious places. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and extreme heat.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
