Overview

Opens and closes bridge as needed, completes associated paperwork as necessary.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

         

  • Opens and closes bridge as needed clearing signals for train passage.
  • Maintains a record of the date and time the bridge is called for rail traffic, boat traffic, as well as proper identification of such traffic, exact times the bridge is down or up including the time traffic passes and clears.
  • Communication maintained with FEC Yardmaster.
  • Communication maintained with marine traffic.
  • Communication maintained with US Coast Guard.
  • Completion of the annual FEC Bridge Block Operator’s rules class and test including a passing score.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

This position is subject to random drug & alcohol testing

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

 

High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write rou­tine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to speak to marine traffic and US Coast Guard via ma­rine radio, as required

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

 

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, us­ing whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

 

REASONING ABILITY

 

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions fur­nished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with prob­lems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
